Report On 2014 London Youth Games

Kingston’s Medal Haul
Kingston’s finest young athletes competed against 32 London Boroughs in 27 sports in the 2014 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games.
Competitions began back in November 2013 with Cross Country and culminated in the Finals Weekend which took place on 5th and 6th July at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
Teams were supported on Saturday by Kingston’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Cathy Roberts and sponsors of the Kingston Squad, Sport Kingston and Places for People Leisure who watched some very tense and closely fought matches and met many of the athletes and Team Managers.
The Kingston Squad produced some outstanding performances again this year battling the elements and tough opposition with the combined results of all competitions contributing to Kingston finishing 17th which is a whole 6 places above last year.
Together with the results of all competitions which started back in November 2013 with Cross Country, Kingston hauled in a medal tally of the following, which is pretty impressive :-
Individual Gold
Archery, boys
Swimming, backstroke boys
Judo
Cross Country U11 boys

Team Gold
Squash, boys

 Individual Silver
Swimming, backstroke
Balfour Beatty London Youth Games 2014
Individual Bronze
Cross Country, U17 girls
Rowing Regatta, girls

Team Bronze
Badminton, mixed
Tag Rugby girls
Volleyball, girls
Volleyball, boys
Kingston also entered a Diving Team for the first time, even though we had one solitary young diver she still added to the scoreboard and dived magnificently. Our Indoor Rowing Team also had only one rower but he put on a fantastic performance and gained two places on last year, in addition our single entry for Judo achieved Gold- so sometimes it’s not all about quantity!

With so many brilliant performances in so many sports there are far too many to mention here but you can visit the London Youth Games website for a full breakdown of Kingston’s results

There is also a huge variety of photos from this year’s competitions available on the Active Kingston Facebook page www.facebook.com/londonyouthgames/photos_stream?tab=photos_albums

Entering teams into the largest youth sport event in Europe would not be possible without the support, time and dedication of our local sports clubs who trial, select and coach our teams to such a high standard with emphasis on fair play and team spirit.

The Finals weekend was awash with silverware, cheers, congratulations, commiserations and gasps of excitement and the borough is proud of every single athlete who took part and hope that you take up the challenge again next year.

It would not be possible to enter teams into the London Youth Games without the dedication and support from the following local sports clubs, coaches and parents.

Kingston’s LYG Cross Country Team NOW RECRUITING FOR 2015 CROSS COUNTRY EVENT - CLICK HERE
Kingston’s Cross Country Team got Kingston’s London Youth Games 2014 campaign off to a flying start on Saturday with fantastic results contributing to a jump of 13 places on the Jubilee Scoreboard!
Currently Kingston are in 10th position and this is all down to the performances of all of our young athletes.
A few performances to note were those of Olly Wilson (photo) achieving Gold in the Development race running a time of 5:24 (photos top of page and right);
Phoebe Law, echoing her outstanding performance in this year’s Mini Marathon achieving Bronze in the U17 female race with a time of 10:35, just 0.2 seconds away from Gold (photo below);
Mollie O’Sullivan finishing 6th in the U13 female with a time of 7:42;
Mathew Kossatz finishing 8th with 7:45 and Jorge Beltrao finishing 11th with 7:50 in the U13 male race;
Joshua Hall coming a very creditable 17th with 10:37 in the U15 male race and last, but indeed not least, Gabrielle Icmat finishing in 48th position with 9.03,
Balfour Beatty London Youth Games 2014
Bearing in mind that this race had 218 competitors this is an outstanding achievement.
In fact, we could mention each and every one of our 30 young athletes who ALL finished extremely well.
 But we need to recognise also the time, effort and support put in once again by Jim Desmond and Kingston’s very own Stragglers Running Club, without their experience and professionalism before and during the event it would not have been possible for the Kingston Team to take part in this event.
So if you are looking to join a running club then visit the Stragglers website and join up on the The Stragglers Running Club website - you will be in outstanding company.

Kingston’s London Youth Games campaign continues and next to add points to the Scoreboard will be the Kingston Cricket Teams. Managed once more by the Twenty20 Cricket
